A coffee table photo book, which does what it says on the tin – tells the story of Miles’s life and music through a series of photographs, starting with a picture of Miles in his high school band, and ending with Miles playing in London, barely three months before his death.

Many of the photos have appeared in other publications, but they are well worth seeing again. There is a rich source of images, including concert photos, album covers, posters, tickets and adverts. You also get essays on different aspects and eras of Miles’s life from various jazz writers, as well as recollections about Miles from musicians such as Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Clark Terry, and Lenny White. There are also quotes from Miles’s autobiography. The 1980s period is well covered.

My Verdict: If you’ve read the odd biography on Miles, you won’t learn a great deal of new things from this book, but it’s still worth checking out for sheer joy of leafing through the pages and being presented with a wealth of images from Miles’s life.

Availability: Out of print. Hard to believe that this hardback book sold for just £25 when first published. You can still find used copies online from Amazon UK and Amazon US, although for a price.
