Miles Davis At La Villette

On 10 July 1991, barely two months before his death, Miles played a remarkable concert at La Villette in Paris. It was remarkable because Miles did something he normally avoided: looking back. But now, Miles was not only playing with his current band, but old repertoire with ex-band members from the 1950s, 60s, 70s and 80s, including Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul, Dave Holland, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Jackie McLean and Steve Grossman.

This video contains an edited version of the concert and lasts for around an hour. The tunes included are the Prince number “Penetration,” “Dig/Watermelon Man,” “All Blues,” “Human Nature,” and “Jean-Pierre.” Every track is a highlight but I must mention Kenny Garrett’s amazing alto sax solo on “Human Nature,” and the “Jean-Pierre” finale, which sees Miles joined by a host of musicians that includes Al Foster, John Scofield, John McLaughlin and Darryl Jones.
